Standing in line at the veterinarian’s office waiting to be checked in, I must be on full alert and keep my dog on a short leash – literally. My precious little dog is a Shetland Sheepdog, affectionately known as a “Sheltie.” Everyone loves Teddy (“Theodora Duncan Donuts”) because she’s an apartment-sized Lassie. She never goes out in public without being well-coiffed. This dog is stunningly beautiful and she knows it, and she knows that you will know it too.

But standing at the desk in this crowded office, I have to pay attention to everyone else, lest someone step in a bit too close, in which case, Teddy will go on the attack. She’ll jump and snarl and take a bite out of the air, or worse. This is a new problem. This problem started after my husband’s suicide.

Before his suicide, I would tell you that there was never a sweeter, gentler soul walking this earth…
